CRIMINALIZATION OF EXPRESSION

resources

There is a term called “CRIMINALIZATION OF EXPRESSION”

It means declaring any verbal, written, electronic or symbolic expression; either intended seriously or made for fun, as a criminal activity by the State laws. Nowadays, States around the world became too sensitive with so called “National Security” and often making new set of laws that even consider fun or satire as criminal activity! (The trend got more momentum after 9/11 incident!!)
But, as conscious global citizen, we must protest this increased trend of “Criminalizing People’s Expression”. We must say, States are obliged to follow the ARTICLE 19 (3) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which requires governments to follow the principles of 1. Legality (Making specific provisions of Law), 2. Necessity (Whether the repressive action is the last resort or not) and 3. Proportionality (Not to impose serious nature of punishments disproportionately for mere expression); before criminalizing anyone’s expression.
