Inter Year Moot Court Competition Held at Dhaka University

The 7th Inter Year Moot Court Competition was held at University of Dhaka, Department of Law from September 11 to September 14, 2017, organized by Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS). On September 14, 2017 the four-day long competition came to an end through a successful valedictory ceremony.

The competition began on 11th September through a ceremony as Professor Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Chairman, Department of Law, University of Dhaka, inaugurated the competition. Interns’ and Researchers’ Test was also held on the same day. Preliminary Rounds and, Quarter Finals and Semi Finals were held respectively on September 12 and September 13.

19 teams took part in the competition while 12 teams submitted their memorials and 8 teams qualified for the Quarter Finals. A total of 35 students competed as mooters and researchers. Law students of Dhaka University from different batches formed teams with assigned intern researchers. Law academicians, practitioners and faculty members contributed as the Moot Court Judges. With the active participation from everyone, along with the help of volunteers the organizers completed the whole event excellently.

At the very onset of the valedictory ceremony, General Secretary of DUMCS, Romana Afroze Anee welcomed everyone and then she concisely reflected upon the competition days. Afterwards, she requested Dr. Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah to deliver his opening speech.

Dr. Nakib M. Nasrullah, Professor, Department of Law, University of Dhaka, greeted everyone present and urged the participants to be more argumentative and gather more knowledge of law for becoming good mooters.

Following Dr. Nakib’s speech, Former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission, Professor Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman was invited to address the present law students and guests. The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka, chaired the valedictory ceremony. In his speech, he emphasized on the spirit of the competition as he guided the young law students. Mooting is not about analyzing the fact rather it is about analyzing the law by putting it in context of the fact, he said, one would argue with different interpretations to convince the judges as well as representing both sides.

Professor Mizanur Rahman thinks that a moot court competition should bring all the law students together along with the participants. He explained that only attending competition is not the spirit of the moot, finding the interest within it is what mooting is all about. He said, “..from the mistakes we learn, we excel and we learn to develop ourselves”. Hidden skills should be honed and developed, he ended.

Afterwards, Moderator of the Moot Court Society, Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuian gave his vote of thanks. Thanking the honorable Chief Guest for his presence, he appreciated everyone present and expressed his gratefulness to the organizers, judges of the competition, guests, and the committee members of the DUMCS. After acknowledging everyone’s effort, Professor Nazmuzzaman announced the results of the competition and concluded the event.

Riasat Azmi, Psymhe Wadud and Abdullah Al-Jahid as a team became the champion of the glorified Inter Year event. As the defending champions of the 6th Inter Year Moot Court Competition, they retained the title proving themselves the best again. ‘Best Memorial Award’ was won by the team of Meherba Sabrin, Nazifa Muniyat Quader, and Azhar Uddin Bhuiyan; who also became the runner-up of the competition.

Mollik Wasi Uddin Tami, Molla Md. Faruque Ahsan were selected for the Sprit of the Moot Award and they also received the 3rd Honorable Submission Award for their memorial. Nusrat Jahan, Azhar Mahmud, and Saadat Tanbir were each individually recognized as the ‘Best Intern’. Jalal Uddin Ahmed was the ‘Best Researcher’ of the competition and three mooters were selected for the ‘Best Mooter Award’. They are-  Israt Jahan Moumy, Psymhe Wadud and Tanzim Mohammed.

  

Dhaka University Moot Court Society (DUMCS) is the pioneer organisation in mooting in Bangladesh. Inter Year Moot Court Competition is their much anticipated signature event which is organized every year.
