NILS Bangladesh Hosts Workshop on Legal Research & Advocacy Skills at East West University

The Bangladesh Chapter of the Network for International Law Students (NILS), an international, independent, non-political and non-profit organization contributing to the arena of legal education, hosted the Workshop on Legal Research and Advocacy Skills in collaboration with Department of Law, East West University (EWU) on November 24, 2017. Around 130 law students from 25 different universities of Bangladesh participated in the workshop.

The workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Nasrin Sultana, President, NILS Bangladesh, who highlighted the past activities of NILS and its achievements as well as its aims and objectives. Afterwards, Barrister Sohan Khan from Accord Chambers addressed the students and urged them to go beyond textbooks and acquire real-life skills that would not only boost their CVs, but also assist them in building a diverse network.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the sessions of the workshop took place. The first session was conducted by Mr. Md. Pizuar Hossain, Lecturer, Department of Law, EWU on ‘Introduction to Legal Research and Methodology’ while the next one was conducted by Mr. Tahsin Khan, Lecturer, Department of Law & Justice, Southeast University on ‘The Art of Mooting and Memorial Writing’. The final session was facilitated by Professor Dr. Tureen Afroz, Chairperson, Department of Law, EWU on ‘The Art of Advocacy’. Various aspects of legal research and technical know-hows of a career as an advocate were elaborately discussed in each of the sessions.   

A closing ceremony took place at the end of the day were the best performers of the workshop were awarded and the participants received their certificates from the guests. Ali Mashraf from University of Dhaka and Esrat Jahan from East West University jointly won the Best Performer award. Dr. Fouzia Mannan, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences chaired the ceremony. In her speech, Dr. Mannan thanked the participants for such a lively workshop and advised them to be honest, responsible and committed in the arena of legal profession.

NILS Bangladesh intends to host more such learning sessions in near future.
