Post-Jessup workshop held at IUB

After successfully organizing the national round of the 59th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition which is regarded as the most respectable competition for law students, a post-Jessup workshop was held from 26th September to 27th September 2018.

Jessup Bangladesh, International Law Students Association (ILSA) organized the two-day workshop on mooting with the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training (OPDAT) and Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) under the title, ‘Orchestrating the Future, Analyzing the Past’. The event was attended by participants and coaches from 18 universities at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB).

On the first day, the workshop opened with the session conducted by Dr. Md. Rizwanul Islam, Associate Professor, Dept. of Law, North South University on ‘Jurisdiction before Submission.’ He discussed why it is necessary to understand the jurisdiction and procedure of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the moot court competition as he educated the participants on the same.

A session on ‘The Use of Compromis’ followed thereafter where Ms. Nusrat Jahan, Lecturer, Asia Pacific University Bangladesh Coach, Jessup Team, National Round explained how a compromis should be analyzed. She shed lights on the difference between reading and skimming the compromis.

The last session of the first day was on ‘Writing a Memorial.’ Greg Davis, Intermittent Legal Advisor, Department of Justice (U.S. DOJ), U. S. Embassy Dhaka, talked on the skills required and techniques to follow while preparing a memorial.

Communicate not Deliver: The Art of Submission’ was conducted by Eric Opanga, Resident Legal Advisor, U.S. Department of Justice, OPDAT, U.S. Embassy Dhaka. The participants were familiarized with effective ways to deliver their submission before judges on the last day of the workshop. As the day progressed, the session titled ‘Convince not Counter: The Art of Answering Questions’ upskilled the enthusiastic participants with the tactics of answering the questions raised by the judges.

Christabel Randolph, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Head of Legal, Marico International, shared her personal experiences of mooting while exemplifying how to deal unfavorable questions of judges eloquently. She also cautioned the law students on the general mistakes made in a memorial and guided them on how to edit and add references adequately and properly. She adeptly communicated an adjudicators’ perception of memorial with her audience. The participants interacted and placed their queries in the Q&A session held immediately after the session.

Later in the workshop, Ragib Mahtab, Lecturer, American International University shared his understanding of moot court competitions with the attendees. He has been the ‘Best Mooter’ in the Jessup Bangladesh National Round 2016. A B M Imdadul Haque Khan, Assistant Professor, Eastern University motivated the participants while sharing his insights as the two times qualifying coach.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Professor Milan Pagon, Pro-Vice Chancellor, IUB and in the closing ceremony Professor Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Adviser, Department of Law, IUB & President, AsianSIL, Bangladesh, Greg Davis, Intermittent Legal Advisor, Department of Justice (U.S. DOJ), U. S. Embassy Dhaka, Eric Opanga, Resident Legal Advisor, U.S. Department of Justice, OPDAT, U.S. Embassy Dhaka, appreciated the effort put behind the workshop.

A S M Sayem Ali Pathan, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh & National Administrator of Jessup Bangladesh National Round, 2019 delivered a vote of thanks. The event concluded soon afterwards a certificate giving ceremony.
